Registration / License

Q: I have purchased a license from avast! via the web, but the invoice told me I had purchased an MP3Download Manager and other products. How do I get a refund?

A:

You have searched for an antivirus solution via the web (possibly Google) and thought you purchased avast! However, you have received an email invoice, but there is no mention of avast! but other products that you did not order have appeared instead - the amount may also be higher than you thought you were paying.

Q: I have purchased a Lifetime or Gold License package, but avast! reports my lisence has expired.

A:

avast! is reporting that my license has expired, but I have just recently purchased a "Lifetime" or "Gold" License package. What do I do?

Q: I have received my license key by e-mail, but when I try to insert it into the program, as shown in the instructional video, it appears to be too long for the space available; what can I do?

A:

This problem normally only occurs in avast! versions 4.5.561 and older. It can be solved easily by downloading, and installing, the latest version of avast! from our website. You should then be able to insert the license key without any problems.

Q: Define commercial in the sense of non-commercial use of avast! Home Edition?

A:

"Commercial", using our definition, would define ANY work done for a commercial aim (money is not the issue, nor is profit so, for instance, non-profit charity work would be commercial in nature.)

Hobbies would be considered home use; except where such hobby is running a commercial business (again, money and profit are not relevant to the definition.)

Q: I haven't received the license key, why is this?

A: The distribution of license keys is an automatic process, nobody decides whether to send or not send the key. Here are the most common reasons for not receiving the key:

  • The e-mail address you have entered is not valid. In this case, the e-mail has been probably returned to us.
  • Your e-mail server is unavailable or reports errors while receiving the e-mail with the license key. It is possible that this e-mail will be delivered later, usually the delivery is re-tried at 4 hours intervals, for a few days.
  • Your e-mail box is full, so the e-mail with the license key can't be delivered.
  • You are using some kind of spam protection, and the e-mail with the license key has been rejected for some reason. You can add register@avast.com to your trusted e-mail addresses to solve this problem.
If you don't receive the e-mail with the license key during one day, we recommend you to register again, using a different e-mail address and/or e-mail server.

Q: I have updated avast! HOME to version 4.1. Now I can´t start avast and It asks me to buy it. Why is this?

A: There was a little bug in the first release of avast! build 4.1.259, when the license keys generated in January 2003 were wrongly identified as invalid. The easiest solution of this problem is to register again on our website. You will recieve a new activation key via e-mail. Start avast!, ignore the first window asking to buy avast! and insert the new license key.

Q: I have lost my license key, what can I do now?

A: Simply register again. You will recieve new license key (if the original is about to expire soon), or the original one (if it's still valid).

Q: My licence key has expired, what should I do?

A: First, check your license key validity. You can do it this way:

  1. Right-click on the blue a-ball icon in system tray.
  2. Select "About avast!..." from the menu.
  3. In the window that appears, unroll the "Registration key" item.
  4. Check "Updates expiration" date and compare it to the current date.
Now you can see if your license (registration) key has really expired. If the updates expiration date is older than the current date, you have to obtain and enter a new license key. It means:

  • If you are using avast! Professional, you need to buy a new license. Contact your distributor or use our online secure store.
  • If you are using avast! Home, you can simply register again and get a new key by filling in the registration form.
Once you get the new license key, enter it into avast!.

If the license key seems to be valid (the updates expiration is in future), you should check your system date. It is probably not set correctly. In that case, set the system date correctly and enter your license key again.

Q: I have registered to use your Avast 4 Home version, and have got my registration number. Unfortunately, I don't know what to do with it now.

A: You have to download avast! 4 first and install it. Then restart your computer. After restart, you will see the blue a-ball icon - now you can follow the instructions sent along with the license key.

Q: I have successfully registered to use your avast! antivirus program, and I received the activation key without any problems. However, when I try to enter the key, the program says "Invalid license number". Why?

A: The activation key is valid. Try using the copy & paste method to enter it into avast! (watch the instructional video); Also, keep in mind that this number can't be used on any server operating system, and that you have to be logged in to Windows with administrators rights (to enter they key).
Finally, check if your system date is set correctly. The license key is valid for one year, so if your system date is set to a value when the key is expired, it becomes invalid. In that case, set the system date correctly and enter the same license key again.

Q: I have "avast! 4 Home" installed on my home computers and have entered the same license key on all of them. Does using the same license key on more than one computer harm the avast! functionality or updating capabilities in any way?

A: No, it doesn't. The registration of "avast! 4 Home" is implemented due to processing statistics. The same license key on more computers (provided they are used for non-commercial purposes and in home use only) doesn't harm the avast! functionality or ability to update in any way.

Q: A red box warns me that my license was temporarily disabled – what does it mean?

A:

This may happen when avast! detects a manipulation with system date. Please set a correct system date and insert your license key once more.
