ADNM FAQ

Q: Can ADNM be used together with MS SQL Server 2005?

A:

Yes, ADNM works flawlessly with MS SQL 2005 and its use is fully supported. However, at least service pack 1 is required (due to bugs in the original release of SQL 2005 Server, ADNM does not work correctly unless the service pack is applied).

If you want to use the free edition of MS SQL 2005 (called "SQL 2005 Express") instead of MSDE, please follow these instructions:

  1. Install SQL 2005 Express (either on the server that will act as AMS, or any other server). Make sure to remember the sa account password. It is recommended to install the SQL Server as a named instance (so that it doesn't interfere with other SQL installations that may be already present on the machine) - as an instance name, use e.g. "AVAST".
  2. Start the installation of ADNM (you can use the smaller package that doesn't include MSDE). Make sure the "Install MSDE" check box is unchecked.
  3. When asked for SQL server details, fill in the name and instance of the SQL Server and the correct sa account password. If there's a problem with the database connection, the installation wizard will prompt you.
  4. Complete the installation as usual.

Note: SQL Server 2005 Express cannot be used if you want to run ADNM in multi-AMS mode. This is because the Express edition of SQL Server doesn't support "snapshot publication" (a feature of SQL replication system that the multi-AMS mode relies on); for more information about the differences between SQL 2005 Express and MSDE, please see this page on Microsoft website.

Q: Can ADNM directly manage avast! Home or Professional Editions?

A:

No. ADNM can only work with special "managed" versions of avast! antivirus. There is one managed version for Windows workstations and one for Windows servers (including plugins for MS Exchange, SMTP, SharePoint etc). These versions are functionally fully equivalent to avast! Professional and Server Edition, respectively, but they have an additional component that takes care of the communication with the management server.

Q: How can I deploy ADNM and the managed clients on a network with avast! Professional/Server Edition (or avast32 3.0) already in place?

A:

Proceed as if there was no avast! installed on the machines at all. You don't need to uninstall anything - just deploy the managed versions on top of the existing ones (the setup program of the managed version will be able to handle this situation gracefully).

Q: How can I deploy ADNM and the managed clients on a network with another (non-avast) anti-virus already in place?

A:

You should first remove (uninstall) the current antivirus program before starting the installation of ADNM and the avast! managed clients. This will prevent any conflicts or problems in the future.

Q: I want to use ADNM but all I have is a license key for avast! Professional Edition licenses. (Or, I have a license file but it is not accepted by ADNM.) What is the solution?

A:

ADNM requires a valid license file with the "avast! NetClient" product listed. If you own valid avast! licenses and still don't have such a file (e.g. because it was not sent to you, or because you lost it), please use our online License File Request Form. After filling in the form, you will receive your license file momentarily (the service is operated automatically).

Q: What languages is the avast! managed client available in?

A:

The management client supports the same languages as avast! Professional Edition. For a complete list, please refer to the download page of avast! Professional Edition.

Q: What languages is the ADNM (console) available in?

A:

Currently, the ADNM console is only available in the English language.

Q: Where can I download the avast! managed client setup program?

A:

Normally, you don't have to do this. This is because the avast! Management Server (the principal part of ADNM) automatically maintains its local mirror of all installation packages and lets you deploy the managed clients by using the Deployment tasks (or a couple of alternative methods, as described in the ADNM Administrator's Guide).

If you still need to download the separate setup EXEs, please see the bottom ADNM download page.

Q: How much does ADNM cost?

A:

ADNM per se is free of charge. You only need to buy apropriate number of avast! licenses to take advantage of using ADNM. Please refer to our current price lists for more info or use our online price calculator.
